POETRY ARCHIVE

Pastor George writes a poem over breakfast every Sunday morning, and recites it at the close of worship. Here is an archive of a few of those poems, plus a few poems that he has written on other occasions.

AS BREAD AND WINE There are some times with friends When you need not be The center of their attention, Nor even part of the general conversation, For it is enough to be nearby, While they go about their tasks, And feel the warmth Of what words you have always shared. Those times are evidence That friendship is sacrament, As bread and wine, Lifting a burden from you And presenting in exchange, Peace. George R. Pasley August 20, 2010 Ketchikan AK

THE TYPE OF ASH GOD SEEKS TO FIND

The type of ash God seeks to find

Is the ash saved by the gardener

From the winter stove and scattered

Just-so to fertilize the fallow ground,

Turned under with good labor-

An offering made with prayer

Among the seeds of corn and squash,

The hills of pumpkin and potato.

So let this be now our practice-

Scattering the ash of our repentance

Just so in a mercy-hungry world,

Offering our sacrifice of love,

Praying without ceasing whilst

We tread with hope and faith

Among the seeds of peace and justice

And the stalks of reconciliation.

HOW WOULD YOU PICTURE PEACE?

How would you picture peace?

A soldier returning home.

How might you imagine love?

A mother with her child.

How would you describe faith?

An elder deep in prayer.

How would you portray joy?

With children engaged in play.

How would you express hope?

A gardener, with a catalog of seeds.

But does not the soldier love?

Does not the mother believe?

Does not the elder rejoice?

Do not the children hope as well?

Does not the gardener know peace?

So how might we imagine them together?

I think a congregation,

Wrestling in prayer together

About the things that matter,

Still placing trust in God,

Daring to imagine

God’s promised kingdom

Of peace and love,

Faith, joy and hope.
